Neurotoxin

In Scottsdale, AZ

Prevents wrinkles and lines as well as smooths expression wrinkles.

What Are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins or neuromodulators are a type of injectable that are derived from botulinum toxin type A to treat dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions. Botulinum toxin creates a chemical barrier that will temporarily stop muscle movement. The muscles could still move, they just are not receiving the message from the brain to do so. This barrier will metabolize and wear off in about 3 to 4 months. Normal movement will return if left untreated. To put it

in perspective, it is as if you have a cell phone but you do not have service with a carrier. Your phone could still make a call, it just can’t get service. There are many aesthetic applications. The use of neurotoxin to reduce certain muscle movement offers an alternative to some surgical procedures such as correcting a downturned nose or downturned corners of the mouth.

Different Types of Neurotoxins

We offer several types of FDA-approved botulinum toxin injectables at our office:

Botox

Botox is the original botulinum toxin injectable. It is mainly used to treat fine lines and wrinkles like crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, frown lines (glabellar lines) between the brows, marionette lines or parentheses on the sides of the mouth, and other types of fine wrinkles. Botox also has medical uses and can be used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), jaw clenching, and chronic migraine.

Dysport

Dysport is also a widely used neuromodulator with FDA indications for treating frown lines between the brows. Dysport is a smaller molecule than some other brands of neurotoxin, such as Botox. The smaller molecule allows for greater diffusion of the product providing a less rigid appearance. Dysport is also known to have a slightly greater duration in some individuals.

Xeomin

Xeomin is often referred to as “cleaner tox” because it has a more purified formula free from accessory proteins. Some patients may prefer Xeomin because the purified formula limits the risk of allergic reaction and allows for consistent results. Xeomin is also known to take effect sooner than Botox. Over time, the human body can develop a resistance to Botox, and the effects might not be as prominent as the first treatment. If Botox is no longer giving you the results or duration you want, Xeomin may be a good option.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau is made from a slightly different form of botulinum toxin called prabotulinumtoxinA. It is currently FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines. Like Xeomin, Jeuveau can be a great alternative if you are no longer seeing optimal results from Botox injections.

Who Can Benefit From Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxin injectables are safe for most men and women who wish to prevent or treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles. As long as you do not have an allergy to botulinum toxin, are not pregnant or nursing, and do not have an active skin infection in the treatment area, you may be a great candidate for neurotoxins. These injectables are designed specifically for fine lines but are commonly used with dermal fillers to simultaneously treat deeper facial folds and wrinkles.

The following types of wrinkles and conditions can be treated with various types of neurotoxins:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Marionette lines
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Downturned nose or nasal bumps
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Neck bands
  • Pebbled chin
  • Oversized Jaw muscles and TMJ pain from teeth grinding
  • Lip flip

What is Recovery like after Getting Neurotoxin?

There is minimal downtime and recovery after neurotoxin treatments. Mild swelling, bruising, and redness in the treated areas are possible but will subside within a couple of days. For 1-2 days, we recommend avoiding strenuous activity, sun exposure, and alcohol consumption. Results will develop in about 5-10 days and last an average of 3-4 months. Additional treatment sessions can be scheduled to maintain your youthful appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Neuromotoxins?

What is Botox?

Botox (short for botulinum toxin) is an FDA-approved injectable substance made from a protein that occurs naturally in the body. A noninvasive, though temporary, alternative to surgery, BOTOX Cosmetic makes the face smoother, younger-looking and free of lines and wrinkles.

How Does Botox Eliminate Wrinkles?

Every day, our faces go through a workout as they express our emotions and communicate non-verbal messages to other people. To make these expressions, certain facial muscles need to contract; over time, these repeated expressions form lines on our skin that don't go away even after the expression is gone. These lines can make us look older and worn out. Botox injections temporarily paralyze the targeted facial muscle or muscles that cause facial wrinkles to form. After a Botox treatment, you can expect to look years younger, with smoother, firmer skin creating a wrinkle-free, yet natural-looking, facial appearance.

What is a Neuromodulator?

Botox is one of a group of injectables collectively known as neuromodulators. Botox is a brand name, and BOTOX Cosmetic is an injectable product marketed by the manufacturer. All neuromodulators work by relaxing facial muscles and preventing them from contracting, thereby smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Other popular neuromodulators include Dysport and Xeomin. Dysport can be effective for certain areas, such as 11's or vertical creases between the eyes, but Botox is typically the preferred muscle-relaxer treatment. When the underlying muscles are responsible for the wrinkles, neuromodulators are an effective way to give these muscles a rest.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Botox Injectable Treatment?

People who are considered suitable candidates for Botox are men and women who want a younger-looking face with less-noticeable wrinkles.

How is a Botox Treatment Performed?

Dr. Ali Ghafouri administers Botox at his office in a routine visit that typically takes fewer than 15 minutes to complete. Dr. Ghafouri will use tiny, fine needles to inject the substance into the facial muscles targeted for treatment (based on which wrinkles are being softened).

Is a Botox Injection Painful?

A Botox treatment creates only minimal discomfort, as the needles being used are very fine. If you prefer, however, Dr. Ghafouri can use an anesthetic cream to numb the area before injection.

What Is the Recovery Period Like?

There is no downtime or recovery period after Botox. In fact, it is often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure” because people can have the treatment on their lunch hour and then return to daily life immediately afterward. There may be some mild redness and/or swelling in the treatment area, which typically disappears after the first day. Though you can return to work, driving and regular exercise immediately, avoid touching the injection sites or engaging in any strenuous activity for the remainder of the day after your treatment.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Typical Botox results last anywhere from four to six months.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

Many factors influence the cost of Botox, including the location, experience of the injector and treatment details. Larger muscles may require more units of Botox than smaller areas, and some wrinkles are asymmetrical, requiring more Botox on one side than the other. The facial muscles are typically stronger in men and need additional Botox units. The severity of your wrinkles will also play a part in your cost estimate for Botox.nnBe wary of too-good-to-be-true prices for Botox. You need a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon to perform your injectable treatment to ensure safe and effective results. Sacrificing quality for a lower price can lead to unsatisfactory results that cost more to address. The surgeon's experience and your comfort level with the surgeon are essential factors to consider when choosing your Botox provider.nnAvoid social gatherings or “Botox parties” designed to offer injectables at a low price for a large group of people. There are many health concerns with Botox treatment in these settings and an increased risk for unsatisfactory results and adverse reactions.
