Hair Loss in Phoenix

Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment ScottsdaleFull, thick hair is a desirable trait, but your genetics may undermine your hair growth. Over 80% of men and almost half of all women experience hair loss at some point in their lives, with hair thinning often beginning before middle age. Fortunately, cosmetic treatments have been found effective at slowing hair loss and in many cases even regrowing follicles. If you would like to address hair thinning and maintain lush hair that lasts a lifetime, visit our office in Scottsdale to learn more about hair restoration.

Causes of Hair Loss

Most hair loss is hereditary, which means that your genes predispose you to having hair loss. This type of hair loss is called androgenic alopecia but is better known as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. For men, this usually means a gradually receding hairline that works its way from the front to the back of the scalp. For women, the hairline usually remains intact, but the hair becomes progressively thinner.

Alopecia areata is another potential source of hair loss. This condition is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair to fall out in patches. Other forms of hair loss are temporary. For example, some people experience hair thinning during stressful periods in their life, but the hair usually grows back once the stress is resolved. Most cancer patients also lose their hair while undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, but the hair returns once the treatment is complete.

Hair Loss Treatment

Dr. Ghafouri has had success helping regrow follicles in patients’ scalps with PRP (platelet rich plasma). Your blood contains platelets and plasma, which are useful for carrying proteins and nutrients that can repair damaged tissue. Injecting your own blood (with a high concentration of PRP) into your scalp can stimulate new hair growth.

To start this procedure, your provider will draw your blood. The blood is then put through a centrifuge to remove the red and white blood cells and create a PRP liquid for reinjection. The purified PRP is then injected directly into the hair follicles in need of rejuvenation. As a treatment enhancement, you may elect to have microneedling performed on the scalp immediately following the injections. Microneedling is a collagen-boosting treatment that uses a series of miniature needles to stimulate follicular activity. The providers may apply any additional PRP on the scalp where it is absorbed into these micro-channels so that regeneration can begin.

You may decide to pair PRP treatment with other hair loss treatments such as hair transplant or medications like minoxidil (Rogaine) or finasteride (Propecia). Clinical trials have found that combining PRP with other forms of hair restoration has improved the results significantly.
