A successful eyelid lift or blepharoplasty is one that restores your face’s natural beauty and youth. Dr. Ghafouri uses leading-edge surgical and non-surgical treatment methods to create the natural-looking results that you desire.

With Dr. Ghafouri’s experience and expertise in this area of the face, you’ll never be left wondering if anyone can notice that you had cosmetic work performed. By using specialized advanced techniques, Dr. Ghafouri is able to choose the best possible treatment plan for your specific cosmetic issue. As an oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Ghafouri specializes in this area of face. This level of expertise and experience distinguishes him from other plastic surgeons who operate on other parts of body.

What Makes Blepharoplasty Look Natural?

A natural-looking blepharoplasty result is largely contingent on restoration over reconstruction. To achieve an unaltered look, Dr. Ghafouri will only make the necessary corrections and restorations in order to return your face to its youthful appearance. In some cases, plastic surgeons attempt to change the fundamental structure and shape of a patient’s face. Dr. Ghafouri’s natural-looking blepharoplasty treatments are designed to rejuvenate and restore — not change — your core underlying facial structures.

Unnatural-looking blepharoplasties are often the result of plastic surgeons seeking to change too much about their patients’ natural faces or not understanding the unique anatomy of the patient’s aging face. They may remove too much skin and fat resulting in a hollowed look. Aggressive surgery may lead to complications, such as the inability to close the eyes, lid retraction, scarring and dry eyes. In many ways, a natural-looking blepharoplasty is about knowing when to stop — the more original features remain, the better the end result.

The Initial Consultation

Dr. Ghafouri’s approach begins with an initial consultation and evaluation. During this first conversation, Dr. Ghafouri will explore the different cosmetic treatment options available to you. Depending on your needs, he may recommend either a surgical or non-surgical approach. In some cases, a hybrid approach is followed — a surgical blepharoplasty combined with or followed by laser or radiofrequency treatments — to reveal healthier, tighter skin and promote collagen induction.

Lower Blepharoplasty

It’s common for lower eyelids to droop, sag and/or puff up as you age. As we age, the skin underneath your eyes thins and stretches out and fat becomes displaced.

A lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedure enables Dr. Ghafouri to address fat pockets around the lower eye area. In most cases, it is best to reposition and reshape the fat pockets to rejuvenate your natural appearance without removing too much soft tissue. If you find yourself struggling with dark circles, shadows or other symptoms of volume loss, fat repositioning is a fantastic way to recover your face’s original youthfulness. If there is too much laxity, tightening of the eyelid suspensory ligaments/muscles (cathopexy or canthoplasty) may be performed at the same time. In some cases, fat grafting may be performed — here, Dr. Ghafouri will transplant microfat from another area of your body to the area underneath your eyes and cheek. The goal is to add more volume to the mid face area, restoring your youthful appearance. This three-dimensional lift makes your surgical results as natural-looking as possible.

If you’re looking for a non-surgical approach, injectable fillers are a wonderful (and temporary) solution to many lower eyelid problems. Injectable fillers are designed to restore your face’s natural volume and eliminate dark circles, sunken or hollow-looking eyes.

A typical (surgical) lower eyelid blepharoplasty requires anywhere from 10 to 14 days of recovery. It is imperative that you avoid deviating from your post-operative care instructions during this period.

Upper Blepharoplasty

An upper blepharoplasty aims to lift and tighten the upper eyelid. As you age, the upper eyelid skin tends to sag and wrinkle. An upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin from the upper eyelid and tightens the remaining skin in order to restore a smooth and youthful appearance. It is not how much skin or fat is removed, but how much is left behind in order to obtain natural results. These techniques ensure that at the same time, the eyelids’ physiological function (protecting your eyes) is maintained.

Fine incisions are placed along your naturally appearing eyelid crease. If there is asymmetry between the eyelid platforms or the lid cease is not adequate, then special sutures are placed in order to reform a natural eyelid crease and platform. If the eyebrows or forehead are too low or drooping, this needs to be addressed as well because of its continuum with upper eyelids.

A typical upper eyelid surgery requires approximately 7 to 14 days of recovery. It is recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise or excessive physical activity during this period. Dr. Ghafouri will provide you with customized post-operative instructions — be sure to follow them as closely as possible.

Complementary Skin Resurfacing Procedures

Skin resurfacing is sometimes performed in conjunction with blepharoplasty procedures. Skin resurfacing involves the use of lasers to treat the upper and lower eyelid skin, removing wrinkles and fine lines. This reveals new skin that has a youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Skin resurfacing is a fantastic non-surgical way to reclaim a youthful appearance. Healing usually takes between 7 to 10 days, depending the extent of the treatment.
