Tips for a Successful Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Whether you seek eyelid surgery in Phoenix for cosmetic or medical reasons, your recovery process plays an important role in the success of your results. To help you prepare for your recovery, Dr. Ali Ghafouri of Arizona Oculoplastic Specialists shares the following tips.

Keep your head elevated. Once you return home from surgery, you will need to rest. Elevating your head and keeping it at a level higher than the rest of your body helps reduce swelling and promote faster healing. Use two or three medium size pillows or an inclined foam wedge to elevate your head.

Prepare your recovery station. Because your recovery starts the moment you get home, it’s wise to have your recovery station clean and ready beforehand. Lay out clean linens and blankets on either your bed or couch, as well as tops that you can easily button or zip up. And because you won’t have any energy to cook, it’s wise to buy foods that are easy to prepare (e.g., soups). Don’t forget to stock up on a few cold compresses, as they help alleviate discomfort and swelling.

Use all medication as prescribed. Dr. Ghafouri will prescribe pain medication to alleviate any discomfort you may feel following surgery. If you choose to take over-the-counter medication, it’s imperative that you speak to your surgeon first. Anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided as they can increase your risk of bleeding. Prior to surgery, Dr. Ghafouri should give you a complete list of medications and supplements to avoid.

Keep the eye area clean. Following your surgery, Dr. Ghafouri will go over how and when to clean your eyes and surrounding area. Avoid wearing makeup and lotions until cleared by your doctor. If you experience excessive tearing or dryness, do not attempt to rub your eyes. Instead, use eye drops to keep the eyes moist and comfortable. Ask Dr. Ghafouri for recommendations on eye drops.

Be patient. While the results from eyelid surgery can be stunning, they are not immediate. Expect swelling in the treatment area for the first few weeks after surgery. It may take up to three weeks for the swelling to completely dissipate. It’s important that you follow your doctor’s orders and rest for as long as directed to allow your body to heal properly. Rushing your recovery process can strain the treatment area and affect your results.
