What is Functional Blepharoplasty?
There are many similarities between functional and cosmetic blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), but the main difference is that functional blepharoplasty is specifically designed to remove sagging skin that blocks your field of vision. As we age, the skin loses elasticity, resulting in volume loss and skin sagging. Excess fat also builds up and this can add to the heaviness of droopy eyelids.
Severe skin laxity on the eyelids results in eyelid skin that hangs over the lash line, partially obstructing your peripheral vision (side vision). This can make it difficult to drive, play sports, and perform other daily activities. Functional blepharoplasty mainly treats the upper eyelids, but both the upper and lower eyelids can be addressed if you are concerned with puffy bags or sagging skin on the lower eyelids. Whether you are seeking upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery to address excess eyelid skin, functional eyelid surgery is ideal for improving your vision.
Would You Benefit from Functional Blepharoplasty?
Patients who are in overall good health with no underlying medical conditions are often candidates for functional blepharoplasty (an eyelid lift). Eyelid surgery candidates are often 60 years or older, once skin aging starts to set in. Most patients undergo eyelid surgery for the following concerns:
- Drooping upper eyelids
- Limited side vision
- Moderate to severe skin laxity on the upper lids
The Functional Blepharoplasty Procedure
The functional blepharoplasty procedure can be performed under local anesthesia administered through an IV. This puts patients into twilight sleep, meaning they will feel relaxed and hardly notice the procedure happening. Once you are sedated, Dr. Ghafouri will make an incision in the eyelid crease at the top of the upper lid. Excess skin and tissue will be excised (removed) and the remaining loose skin will be pulled up to tighten and smooth the upper eyelid. This surgery typically takes about 30 minutes.
Functional Blepharoplasty Recovery
The benefit of placing patients in a twilight sleep, rather than going under general anesthesia, is that they can expect a quicker recovery coming out of surgery. For the first two days, swelling and bruising will be at their worst so you should rest and relax at home. Patients typically take 4-5 days off work and more strenuous exercise should be avoided for 10-14 days. Dr. Ghafouri will carefully monitor your recovery and advise you on when it is safe to start resuming more strenuous activities. Most swelling and bruising will reduce within two weeks and after that time, you can enjoy your rejuvenated look and improved quality of life.
