What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that treats signs of aging and a wide variety of surface imperfections. The microneedling device is equipped with several tiny needles that puncture the surface of the skin and create microchannels. This triggers the body’s natural healing process and the production of new collagen and elastin.
Collagen is a protein in the skin that is largely responsible for skin elasticity, volume, and structure. As we age, collagen production slows down and existing collagen fibers break down, leading to skin sagging, wrinkles, and facial volume loss. Microneedling mildly resurfaces the skin, most commonly used to smooth fine lines and reduce acne scaring. Microneedling is also helpful to reduce the appearance of melasma discoloration.
Would You Benefit from Microneedling?
Men and women in overall good health who want to improve uneven skin tone and skin texture can benefit from microneedling. Candidates should not have a history of bleeding problems or an active skin infection in the treatment area. Conditions that can be treated with microneedling include:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Mild to moderate skin laxity
- Hyperpigmentation
- Enlarged pores
- Acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks
Microneedling Procedure
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment performed in-office by our skilled, licensed aestheticians. At the start of the microneedling procedure, your skin will be cleansed, and a topical numbing cream comfortable is used to provide you with a comfortable treatment experience. As the microneedling device moves across your skin, you might feel tiny pricks, but this should cause minimal discomfort. The entire procedure takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
Microneedling + PRP
Microneedling can be combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for more effective skin rejuvenation. PRP contains a wealth of healing and growth factors, including stem cells, and is naturally sourced from your own blood. The microchannels created with the microneedling device allow the PRP to be absorbed into the deep skin layers, encouraging tissue regeneration and collagen production on a deeper level. Microneedling with PRP can also be used on the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles and encourage new hair growth for patients with thinning hair.
Microneedling Recovery
There is minimal recovery and downtime after microneedling. Patients might have mild redness and tenderness, but this will improve within a few days. As the skin heals, it’s important to avoid sun exposure and other forms of direct heat. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 1-2 days after the microneedling procedure. Most patients will see improved skin texture and healthier, radiant skin after just one treatment, but six to eight treatments may be needed for optimal results.
