Over time, the skin loses its elasticity and begins to droop while muscle tone and fat become displaced. One area this is quite noticeable in is the chin and neck area. As a result, many people turn to neck contouring options to help turn back the hands of time. In this blog post, Dr. Ali Ghafouri of Arizona Oculoplastic Specialists discusses three options for a sleeker, more youthful neck.
Facelift
What it treats: sagging skin, creases, displaced muscle and fat, vertical lines on the neck
Considered to be the gold standard in facial rejuvenation, facelift surgery addresses a range of facial aging concerns on the face and neck areas. When treating the neck area, facelift removes excess sagging skin and tightens the remaining skin for a firmer and smoother appearance. As a result, the appearance of vertical lines on the neck also improves. Facelift is ideal for patients with more than one facial aging concern. Dr. Ghafouri specializes in mini facelift, a less invasive variation of traditional facelift that treats the neck and midface areas for a more balanced and youthful look.
Botox
What it treats: vertical lines on the neck
If you’re embarrassed by vertical lines but do not have loose skin or excess fat, Botox can help. This injectable liquid is a popular solution for wrinkles and creases on the face and can be performed in about 15 minutes. Botox works by temporarily relaxing the muscles underneath the skin, smoothing out the wrinkles and lines on the overlying skin. When injected in the neck area, Botox can minimize the appearance of skin bands, restoring a more attractive neck. Results with Botox typically last between three and six months.
Kybella
What it treats: excess submental fat (“double chin”)
Kybella is another minimally invasive injectable treatment but it works quite differently from Botox and other injectables. While Botox relaxes facial muscles and dermal fillers (e.g., Juvederm and Restylane) add volume to facial areas, Kybella eliminates fat cells in the chin and neck area for a slimmer-looking face and a smoother neck contour. The fat cells are permanently destroyed and can never re-generate. Unlike facelift and other surgical procedures, Kybella does not require incisions, bandages or downtime. Most patients see their desired results after three to four sessions spaced several weeks apart. The procedure takes about 20 minutes.
