What Are Dermal Fillers?
Injectable dermal fillers fill in deep lines and wrinkles and add volume to improve signs of facial aging. There are two main types of dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers use hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule naturally found in the body, to plump the skin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) also attracts water molecules to hydrate the skin and restore a glowing complexion.
Other types of injectable fillers use biocompatible ingredients to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a protein in the body that is largely responsible for your skin’s elasticity, texture, and volume. As we age, collagen production slows down, leading to sagging skin and wrinkles. Collagen-stimulating dermal fillers turn back the clock on skin aging with long-lasting, natural-looking results.
Fillers Offered
We offer several different types of fillers at Arizona Oculoplastic Specialists:
Juvéderm
Juvéderm is one of the most popular hyaluronic acid fillers and there are several types of Juvéderm products available for different areas of the face. More cohesive fillers with a thick texture can be used to augment the cheeks and fill in deep facial folds while thinner, flexible formulas can efficiently smooth and plump delicate tissues around the eyes and lips.
We offer the following Juvéderm fillers:
- Juvéderm Voluma XC
- Juvéderm Volbella XC
Restylane
Restylane is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler used to treat moderate to severe wrinkles on various areas of the face. Like Juvéderm, the Restylane Collection offers a variety of fillers with different consistencies and variations in the hyaluronic acid formula. Restylane injectables are typically used to treat moderate to severe wrinkles around the mouth and nose and volume loss in the cheeks.
Restylane fillers we carry include:
- Restylane Silk
- Restylane Lyft
- Restylane Kysse
- Restylane Defyne
- Restylane Refyne
Revanesse Versa
Revanesse Versa HA filler is primarily used to rejuvenate or augment the lips. The unique smooth properties of the HA spheres that make up Versa provide patients with minimal swelling following treatment. Thin lips, asymmetrical lips, or an undefined Cupid’s bow can all be enhanced with Revanesse Versa.
Bellafill
With Bellafill you can expect beautiful, natural-looking results that are long-lasting. Bellafill is the only dermal filler that stimulates collagen growth, which helps maintain your youthful appearance for up to 5 years.
Bellafill offers immediate results and continues to improve months following your treatment. Bellafill’s tiny, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres are suspended within a base of smooth collagen gel. Over time, your body uses the microspheres in Bellafill to create a “scaffold” onto which your own natural collagen will develop.
Radiesse
Radiesse is a collagen-stimulating injectable that uses calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), a substance naturally found in the body, to encourage new collagen growth. Since this ingredient occurs naturally in the body, you can expect natural-looking results that develop in proportion to your overall facial features.
Sculptra
Like Radiesse, Sculptra is a biostimulator, meaning it uses biocompatible ingredients to stimulate natural collagen production. The Sculptra injectable uses poly-L lactic acid (PLLA) to stimulate collagen production to naturally restore facial volume and turn back the clock on skin aging.
Would You Benefit from Dermal Fillers?
Men and women who want to refresh their youthful appearance without the need for plastic surgery are great candidates for dermal fillers. Patients should be in overall good health without a history of bleeding problems or an active skin infection. It’s important to recognize that dermal fillers are mainly used to treat deep facial folds and lost volume. If you are also concerned with dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles formed by repeated facial expressions), dermal fillers can easily be combined with Botox injections.
Dermal fillers target a wide variety of wrinkles and age-related volume loss. Conditions that can be treated include:
- Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
- Thin lips and vertical lip lines
- Hollow cheeks and temples
- Marionette lines
- Hollow tear troughs under the eyes
The Dermal Filler Procedure
Dermal filler injections are quick and virtually painless. Before your treatment, Dr. Ghafouri will ask about your cosmetic goals and assess your medical history to determine the best choice of filler for your customized treatment plan. During the treatment itself, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area to keep you comfortable and then a fine needle is used to inject the filler into various points in the skin. The entire procedure takes 30 minutes or less.
Dermal Filler Recovery
There is minimal downtime and recovery after dermal filler treatment. Most patients return to work or their other daily activities immediately after treatment. However, we do recommend that you avoid strenuous activity, sun exposure, and makeup application for a few days until the injection sites have healed. The results of Sculptra and Radiesse will develop gradually as collagen rebuilds and can last up to two tears. Other fillers last an average of 1-2 years. This can be discussed in greater detail at your consultation.
